How to Calculate How Old You Are

The quick method is to subtract your birth year from the current year. That gives you the right answer only if your birthday has already passed this year.

Here is an example. Someone born on 20 November 1996 looks like they are 30 in 2026 (2026 − 1996). But on 11 October 2026 their birthday has not arrived yet, so they are still 29. They turn 30 on 20 November.

For an exact age in years, months and days, subtract in three steps, starting from the right:

  1. Days: current day minus birth day.
  2. Months: current month minus birth month.
  3. Years: current year minus birth year.

If any step gives a negative number, borrow from the next column. Take this example: born on 14 August 1998, checked on 11 October 2026.

  • Years: 2026 − 1998 = 28
  • Months: 10 − 8 = 2
  • Days: 11 − 14 = −3, which is negative

Borrow one month. Months drop from 2 to 1, and you add the length of the previous month (September has 30 days) to the days: −3 + 30 = 27.

Result: 28 years, 1 month and 27 days.

The tricky part is that months are not the same length. Every borrow depends on how many days the previous month has, and that is the adjustment the calculator makes for you each time.

Why Leap Years Make Age Trickier

A leap year adds an extra day (29 February) to keep the calendar in step with the seasons. The rule has two parts:

  • A year divisible by 4 is a leap year.
  • A century year (1900, 2100) is a leap year only if it is also divisible by 400.

So 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 and 2100 are not. For years, months and days, leap years rarely change the result. They matter when you count total days lived, because every leap day is part of that total.

If your birthday is on 29 February, you only get a calendar birthday every four years. In other years, different countries and organizations treat 28 February or 1 March as your birthday for legal purposes. Check the rule for your country if it affects an official document.

When Your Exact Age Really Matters

For everyday life, knowing your age in years is enough. In some situations, the exact day decides the outcome. Age limits for youth programs, such as those around International Youth Day, often depend on your exact age on a fixed date.

  • Passports and visas: Many applications ask for your age on the date you travel, not today.
  • School admission: Enrollment often depends on whether your birthday falls before or after a cut-off date.
  • Insurance: Premiums and eligibility can change on a specific birthday.
  • Sports and competitions: Age categories are usually based on your age on a fixed date.
  • Medical care: For babies and toddlers, doctors measure age in months or even weeks, so a few days can matter.

Corrected Age for Premature Babies

Babies born early are often described by two ages. The chronological age counts from the birth date. The corrected age (also called adjusted age) subtracts the weeks a baby was born early, because the baby had less time to develop before birth.

For example, a baby born 10 weeks early who is 8 months old by the calendar is closer to 5½ months in developmental terms. Pediatricians commonly use corrected age when looking at growth and milestones in the first couple of years. This is only a reference figure, not a diagnosis, so always talk to your child’s pediatrician about your baby’s development.

How Different Cultures Count Age

Most of the world uses the system this calculator uses: you are zero at birth and add a year on each birthday.

The traditional Korean system works differently. A baby is considered one year old at birth, and everyone adds a year on 1 January rather than on their birthday. Under that system, a baby born in late December turns two just days later. South Korea moved to the international age system for legal and administrative purposes in 2023, but traditional Korean age is still used in everyday conversation.

Chronological Age vs Biological Age

The calculator on this page measures chronological age: the exact time since your date of birth. It is fixed and cannot be changed, and it is the age used for legal documents, school, work and official forms.

Biological age is a different idea. It describes how well your body is functioning, based on things like fitness, sleep, diet and overall health, and it can be better or worse than your calendar age. When someone asks “how old are you?”, they mean chronological age.
