Background and History of International Day against Drug Abuse

Almost every literate person is aware of the disadvantages of drugs these days, but the use of drugs is not getting low. Millions of people around the world are in depression due to drug abuse, but they are unable to quit consuming drugs. Recognizing its catastrophic consequences, the world community united at the Shanghai International Conference on Narcotics Drugs in 1909 aspired to curb the drug trade and drug abuse because it would bring large scale destruction for humankind. Then, the world got involved in the great wars and this important matter was put behind.

Finally, the establishment of the United Nations Organization (UNO) brought good news in this context and the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) established the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND) in 1946. CND had a purpose to help ECOSOC in observing if international drug control treaties are being applied. Finally, the UNGA adopted resolution 42/122 in 1987 and designated an international against drug abuse and illicit trafficking. Later on, the last decade of the 20th century was signalled as “United Nations Decade Against Drug Abuse”.
